Half of employees affected by poor mental health

1 in 2 employees in the UK is affected by poor mental health, according to leading mental health charity Mind.

Many workers keep mental health issues a secret

Only around half of those who said they had been affected by mental health issues like depression and anxiety said they had discussed it with their employers.

Workers are afraid of dealing with the stigma around mental health issues in the workplace, or are worried about job security.

According to the charity, around 300,000 workers a year lose their jobs due to a mental health problem. Mind are campaigning to improve the treatment of mental health issues at work.

More people than ever are approaching their managers about mental health problems, but companies are failing to offer the appropriate training and support. Research from the Institute of Directors showed that only 17% of firms supplied mental health training for managers.

Workplace stress is one of the biggest factors affecting mental health in the UK, with poor relationships with management among the most common sources of mental health issues.

Mind, together with other charities and mental health organisations, have created an online resource for employees and employers, with information and training resources to help support those with mental health issues in the workplace.
