Council Compromise (Settlement) Agreement Figures

According to reports, one council in the North of England has paid out over £600,000 in out-of-court settlements to staff.

Local Authorities/Councils and Settlement Agreements

It has been reported that the figure has been paid out over an eight-year period, to roughly thirty-six staff, to settle redundancy claims and tribunal cases; with reports suggesting that the settlements paid out after included Settlement Agreements.

Following the reports, one of the council leaders said that the council used Settlement Agreements when a member of staff was leaving the authority, to ensure that the council did not end up at an employment tribunal – although the council leader added that no such payouts had been given since 2009.

Whilst news surrounding Settlement Agreements has recently related to councils and public sector organisations, as employment law solicitors, we understand and appreciate that such agreements can be given in all sectors.

In the instance that you have been handed such an agreement, before signing, it is important to have it checked by an experienced employment solicitor, such as a member of our team.

We will check the agreement to ensure that the payout outlined is fair – and should we believe you should receive more, we will tell you and advise you on the process to take.
